Wayne Ryder Powell, 73, died unexpectedly on Saturday, September 6, 2014, at his Pocomoke City river residence. Born August 16, 1941 in Salisbury, Maryland, he was the son of the late John Powell and the late Hilda Causey Powell. Wayne earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering and a Master’s degree in electrical engineering from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he also taught before joining CSC at Wallops Island, working there from 1970-1976. He then joined NASA as a federal employee, working in support of rocket launches at Wallops Island and traveling worldwide for other launches, where he remained a faithful employee until his untimely death. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Guy Powell; one sister, Alecia Powell Burchnall and her husband, Rick, of Glen Mills, PA; one brother-in-law, L. Dean Guy and his wife Deborah; two nieces, Heather Johnston (Michael) and Stacey Moloney (Dan); two nephews, Dustin Burchnall (Jenna) and Jonathan Guy (Sarah); eight great nieces and nephews, many cousins, dear friends and his pet cat “Holly”. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, September 12, 2014, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Sally B. Dolch and the Rev. Kerry Hinton, at Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City, Maryland, where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.
