John Payne

John Thomas Payne, Sr., 84, died on Friday, May 8, 2015, at his Pocomoke home following a courageous battle against cancer. Born June 5, 1930, in Pocomoke, he was a son of the late Arthur J. and Bertie Jones Payne. Mr. Payne graduated from Pocomoke High School (Class of 1947) and was a successful farmer all of his life. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Stockton, MD, the Maryland Farm Bureau, the Pocomoke Ruritans, the Soybean Assoc. of Maryland and the Worcester County Commission on Aging. He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Goswellen Payne, and they were looking forward to celebrating their 61st anniversary next week; one daughter, Elaine Pitts and her husband Ron of Frederick, MD; two grandsons, Ron Pitts, Jr. and John Thomas Pitts and his wife Megan; one great granddaughter, Abigail Pitts; one brother, Carlton Payne (Mary Lou); one sister, Mary Ellen Chandler; two sisters-in-law, Chelsie McCready and Faith Willing (Woody) and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Thomas Payne, Jr. in 1982; a brother, James A. Payne and a sister, Eleanor Ann Payne Cowger. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City, where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the First Baptist Cemetery in Pocomoke City.
