George Gering, Jr.

Colonel George W. “Buzz” Gering, Jr., United States Air Force Retired. age 90, was born at Walter Reed General Hospital and was the son of the late Captain and Mrs. George W. Gering, Sr.. From a military family, he was the grandson of General Henry Smither and Lieutenant John J. Gering, USN. Colonel Gering is survived by his wife of 70 years, the former Cherrix “Cherry” Stevens, daughter of the late A. Hartley and Mollie C. Stevens of Snow Hill. Mr. Stevens was a former mayor of Snow Hill and the Maryland House of Delegates. Colonel and Mrs. Gering are the parents of Col. George W. “Skip” Gering III, USAF, Retired and Hartley Gering Onley, the grandparents of George W. Gering IV, Kyle Gering Buckley, John D. Gering, Kelly Lee Crouch and Kristin Gering Shover and five great grandchildren, Autumn Shover, Preston Shover, Kate Buckley, Luke Buckley and Hutson Gering. He is also survived by his sister, Bernice G. Kelly and two brothers, Henry S. Gering, MD and Colonel Michael S. Gering, USMC, Retired. Colonel Gering was a veteran of WWII. After completion of flying training, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and assigned to B-24 Bombers. He served in England with the 67th Bomb Squadron, 44th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. His Air Force career of 33 years included various command and staff assignments in the United States, Korea, Alaska, and Turkey. He retired as the Director of Attaché Affairs, US Air Force. He is the recipient of two awards of the Legion of Merit in addition to other awards. Following his retirement in 1975 Colonel and Mrs. Gering moved to Snow Hill where Colonel Gering became active in civic affairs. Among his activities, he served as Chairman of the Snow Hill Bi-Centennial, a three day celebration, Mayor of Snow Hill, President of the Snow Hill Chamber of Commerce, President of the Snow Hill Rotary as well as being a member of the Snow Hill Chapter of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He also served on the Salisbury University Foundation in its early years as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nabb Research Center of Salisbury University, recently being named member emeritus of that organization. Colonel Gering held a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Arts degree and completed course work for PhD. He had been affiliated with the History Department of Salisbury University as a lecturer since 1978 serving in a full time capacity for over 32 years.
