Joseph Henry Kelly, 84 of Powellville, died peacefully, February 8, 2015 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, with his family by his side. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Charles Henry Kelly and Mamie Mae Toomey Kelly. Joe proudly served in the U.S. Navy and retired after 20 years of service. During his time in the military, he served on many Navy ships. Among them were the USS CADUS, USS White Marsh, USS ESTES, USS E.A. GREENE, USS PANDEMUS, and the USS EXULTANT. While in the military, he and his family were stationed throughout the United States. He loved traveling around the world. His service was recognized when he received the National Defense Service Medal and Fifth Good Conduct Metal. After retiring as Chief Petty Officer from the Navy he went on to become the maintenance supervisor at Deer’s Head Hospital and, when Holly Center opened, he became the maintenance supervisor there. He retired after 20 years of service to the State of Maryland. Joe was well known for his carpentry, plumbing and electrical skills. He was always willing to help anyone. For years, Joe graciously gave his time and talents to the Powellville United Methodist Church, where he was a member for over half a century. Joe was a devoted family man who was always there for his wife, children and extended family. Joe served several years as president of the board for Powellville Methodist Church and the president of the Powellville Cemetery Board. He was a lifetime member “Master Mason” of Goose Creek, SC, Ancient Free Masons Lodge 401. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bertie Chandler Kelly; 5 children: Bruce Kelly and his wife, Gloria, Susan Dennis and her husband, Robert, Tommy Kelly, David Kelly and Brenda Kelly-Bowden and her husband, Scott Bowden all of Powellville; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His sisters, Gladys Truitt and Mary Shockley, preceded him in death. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Powellville Cemetery, with Rev. David Herr officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Powellville Fire Dept., 5085 Powellville Rd., Pittsville, MD 21850 or to the charity of choice.
