Sarah “Sally” Lee McDowell Thomas, 70, died peacefully Saturday, January 31, 2015, after a long battle with breast cancer. Sally was born August 16, 1944 to the late Allen Franklin Quillen and Mary Sharpley Quillen. After graduating from Lackey High School in Indian Head, MD in 1962, Sally spent several years as a wife and homemaker on Chincoteague Island, her home town. There she attended Christ United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and as a part of a trio, taught VBS, and volunteered at the thrift shop. In 1985, Sally graduated from Salisbury University and fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming an English teacher. Among other schools, she taught at Epworth Christian School in Laurel, DE for 13 years and retired from Salisbury Christian School, where she taught full-time for 6 years and continued to substitute after her retirement. Sally sang with the Salisbury Community Singers and enjoyed sewing, reading, and working on puzzles. She served her Lord at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Salisbury and Cross Pointe Church of the Nazarene, her final church home, where she sang in the choir and on the praise team. She is survived by her three children, Laurie Ann McDowell of Chincoteague, VA, Susan Lynn Boone of Delmar, MD, Kevin Lawrence McDowell and his wife, Heather of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Julian “Jude” Reed McDowell and Quinn Sharon McDowell; one brother, Brad Sharpley Quillen of Exmore, VA; one uncle and several cousins and their families. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 11 am at Cross Pointe Church of the Nazarene with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Contributions may be made in her memory to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802, or to the Women’s Ministry at Cross Pointe Church of the Nazarene, 27765 Nanticoke Rd., Salisbury, MD 21801.
