Clifford Rylan Matthews, 91, of Pocomoke City, died on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Maryland.
Born in Rabbitt Knaw, near Stockton, MD, on August 13, 1922, he was a son of the late William Lee Matthews and the late Lottie Brown Matthews.
He served in the Navy on Guam and at the Norfolk Naval Base, during World War II. Following his military service he worked at Birds Eye for 20 years and at Campbell Soup for another 20 years, retiring in 1987.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved to fish, crab and hunt or just walk in the woods and watch the birds or take walks on the beach with his family. Following retirement, his interests just seemed to keep growing. He was successful at woodworking, carving and painting waterfowl and he became involved in model railroading, sharing his hobby with many friends.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Ruth Jane Crockett Matthews; two daughters, Sharon Lynn Matthews Worth and her husband James of Pocomoke City and Crystal Dawn Matthews and husband Kevin Eppley of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, James Darrell Worth of Gaston, SC, Tracy Lynn Worth Wright and her husband Chris of Wallops Island, VA and Savannah Mae Eppley of Virginia Beach, VA; three great grandchildren, Laina Williams of Bozeman, MT, and Collin James and Casey Lynn Wright of Wallops Island, VA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Matthews Bowden and two brothers, Charles and Ronnie Matthews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, September 9 at the Beaver Dam Presbyterian Church, Makemie Lane, Pocomoke City, MD, where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. Interment, with military honors, will follow in the First Baptist Cemetery on Old Snow Hill Road in Pocomoke City.
