Charles “Benny” Benjamin Riddick, 71, of Salisbury, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2013 at Coastal Hospice At The Lake. Born in Elizabeth City, NC, he was the son of Mildred Riggs Riddick Pritchard of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Benjamin Fentress Riddick and William Pritchard.
“Benny” was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed. He was the Executive Director of the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in Salisbury for 37 years and was a beloved father figure to so many of Salisbury’s children. He oversaw one thousand members and grew programs including football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse and many other activities. Thousands of young people availed themselves to the recreational activities such as table tennis, pool, rifle clubs and many more. “Benny” developed and started a Latch Key Program for kids to assemble when getting out of school while parents were at work. The youth used this program to aid themselves in completing their homework.
“Benny” was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Redmen’s Lodge and the Elks Club in Salisbury. He was also a member of the Bayside Football Officials Association for football games for high schools all over the state of Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. He attended the Salvation Army Church until his health failed. As a tribute to “Benny”, the athletic complex was named after him. There is a copper “Bust” of his likeness erected on the athletic complex as a testament of the thousands of young people and the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army.
He is survived by his loving wife, Bruni Schafer Riddick; sons, Charles “Chuck” Benjamin Riddick, Jr. of Wayne, PA and Joseph Mizelle Riddick and his wife, Diana of Orem, UT; a step-son, Jeff Mark Palmer and his wife, Vicky of Girdletree; a step-daughter, Denise Andrea Haxter of Salisbury; 13 grandchildren, Jared, Jordan, Josh, Abby, Ashley, Jade, Taylar, Zac, Jasmine, Myah, Danny, Shelby and Benjamin; 2 great grandchildren, Ezryn and Azazel, plus one expected in a few weeks, Karsyn; and 2 brothers, Samuel Riddick and his wife, Yvette of Fredericksburg, VA and Roy Allen Riddick and his wife, Caps of Manteo, NC.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 106 Greenlawn Lane in Salisbury. There will be a visitation on Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury and also on Wednesday at church in the Cultural Hall from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. Bishop Rick Hoppes will officiate.
